What to expect on your first visit

At St John on the Desert we understand that walking into a church for the first time is not always easy. We want you to know right from the start that we are a congregation that welcomes everyone into our church.

What time should I arrive?

Worship begins at 10:00 a.m., but it’s always a good idea to come a few minutes early to find a seat and get comfortable. When you come into our sanctuary you’ll be met by a smiling greeter who’ll give you a printed Worship Bulletin designed to lead you through our worship service. Be prepared for a bunch of folks to welcome you!

What is St John’s worship like?

At St John we believe that everyone participates in the worship of our Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. At a typical worship service you can expect to sing both contemporary and traditional music, share prayers, and listen to a sermon that fosters hope and illuminates the Word of God. But we also have our fair share of atypical worship services: you might be invited to participate in a conversation, or ask questions or watch a drama or see a science experiment. Worship is not one-size-fits-all at St John. We worship in a way that allows us to understand – on many different levels – how God is active and present in our lives.

What should I wear?

“As God’s own, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony”
These words of the Apostle Paul (Colossians 3:12,14) describe our dress code.

When it comes to what you are wearing you can expect to feel welcomed (and you will likely see others) in shorts and sandals, or more church-y attire; please wear whatever makes you comfortable.

How long will I be there?

Our Worship generally takes about an hour. Following worship you’re invited to join us for the best church coffee in Tucson (!), a cold drink, a cookie and some conversation. The kids have a playground immediately adjacent to where we gather.

What about my children?

We love kids at St John and our pastor has been known to add in any number of last-minute opportunities for children who join us in worship. If your child gets noisy and it bothers you (it doesn’t bother us!) there is a “Cry Room” in the back of the sanctuary. We also have Activity bags handy for kids to keep their hands busy. Just ask an usher or greeter or look for them in the narthex (lobby) of our sanctuary.

Is there something for my teenage kids?

We welcome your teens into our time of worship each Sunday and work to include them. Our youth group (6th grade through high school) is currently on hiatus as we eagerly await a new generation of teen learners.

Do you celebrate Communion?

We most certainly do! On the first Sunday of every month we celebrate the Lord’s Supper and all are welcome to join us at God’s banquet table for this holy sacrament.
